ForceStrong FanFic: Original Short Story From David Gremillion

The Value Of Punctuality

It wasn’t the shudder of the Death Star that woke him up. On a prototype of any kind, you expected the occasional shimmy or shake to happen. When you’re an engineer, you are fully prepared for the bumps in the night. It’s part of the territory. Mostly because those damn designers think they know everything. Let those squints spend just one week onboard one of their pet projects and see how THEY like it.

But it wasn’t the second shudder that woke him up. It was the persistent pinging from the computer that finally got his attention. Bleary eyed, he stretched, his toes hitting the end of his bunk. Maybe he could live with the sound after all. He rolled over, pulling the blanket a little higher on his chest.

As if on cue, the console started blinking.

“By the Emperor…” he swore as he climbed out of his bunk.

“What could possibly be so important?” he grumbled to no one in particular.

An urgent message flashed onto the screen.

To: Supervisory Engineer Dagrem

From: Office of the Grand Moff

Re: Repairs Requested (See attachment)

Sir, your skills are required at Section 1138-Gamma, Deck 515 at once. It has come to the Grand Moff’s attention that the Imperial Defense and Research Station (aka Death Star) is in need of immediate repairs. You are hereby authorized to use whatever means at your disposal to complete these repairs.

Remember, the Emperor is counting on YOU!

He rolled his eyes at the last line. The typical propaganda that signed off every email was getting stale and routine. Dagrem knew the Emperor had better things to do than count on each little peon within the vast Galactic Empire.

Another shudder rolled through the deck, causing Dagrem to hold onto the console for support. One shimmy was expected, but three within ten minutes? There must be a problem with the engines to cause this frequency of movement. Those damn designers always under-powered their ideas. He pressed his communicator.

“Kanya, what is…” but he was cut off by the frantic engineer.

“No time! No time! I’ve got to seal off this plasma lea…” and she stopped speaking.

Dagrem shrugged his shoulders. Kanya was always acting like every little problem was the end of the world. One plasma leak on a station one-hundred and fifty kilometers in diameter was a pinprick. He chuckled when he remembered how pale Kanya’s face had turned just because a tractor beam emitter went down. After all the fuss, it turned out someone had just bumped the de-activate button at one of the stations.

He made a mental note to add a login and password to all tractor beam consoles.

Dagrem's eyes widened as he read the attachment. After reading it three times, he let out a low whistle.

“Son of a wookiee,” he muttered. “Someone is going to get fired for this.”

Another low rumble shook the deck. Dagrem quickly dressed, throwing on his uniform and grabbing his boots. He half-walked, half-hopped down the corridor, putting his boots on as he went. The corridor was mostly devoid of people. Those few that he saw were running in various directions.

A sudden feeling of cold washed over him. He felt the shadows grow until the darkness threatened to engulf him entirely. Three individuals walked briskly past him. All of them were tall. All of them wore black.

“Several fighters have broken off from the main group, come with me,” the tallest of them growled in a voice that shook Dagrem to his core.

As quickly as the feeling had come, it was gone.

He shrugged his shoulders and moved on. After all, he had work to do. It was no wonder the Grand Moff was anxious to have this repair completed. As he rode the turbolift to his destination, he couldn’t believe that the fool-headed designers could be this stupid.

What moron put a thermal exhaust port directly above the reactor with only a thin layer of ray shielding to protect it?

They were probably concerned with space debris, not knowing that this research station could be a target for the rebellion. Or they just didn’t care. After all, they’re sitting behind cushy desks at the Kuat Drive Yards or someplace where they didn’t have to worry about bumps, shimmies, or rebels.

“May the Emperor help me,” he muttered as the color drained from his face. Fighters had broken off from the main group? Bumps and shimmies? A plasma leak?

Dagrem half-thought about summoning an engineer team, but he shook it off. By the time he selected a team, pulled them off their assigned duties, it would certainly be too late.

He rushed down the access tunnel, staring up at the stars as he sprinted. Several small fighters zipped past him. Dagrem recognized them as INCOM made fighters, but they moved too fast for him to identify what type. He let out a whoop when he saw the Imperial Navy’s TIE fighters scream after them.

There was only one way to solve this in the short-term. When the Death Star entered hyperspace, all ports were sealed by a retractable meter-thick piece of durasteel. The metal slid it into place only before they broke the light-speed barrier. If he could fool the computer into thinking they were going into hyperspace, the port would seal itself.

Dagrem's hands flew across the console. His heart pounded inside his chest as he accessed the controls to extend the durasteel that would save their lives.

High above, something caught his eye. What was an old Corellian transport doing in a battle-zone? Perhaps he could get an idea of how the battle was going by listening in on his comm channel? That would give him an idea as to how much time he had to work with. The YT class freighter was notorious for having open comms. Dagrem gained access just in time to hear his last words.

“…now let’s blow this thing and go home!”

The Original Trilogy Comes To Chinese Theaters For First Time EVER

Star Wars has, is, and always will be a global phenomenon. Fans from all walks of life have either seen or own copies of the movies, whether it be the original trilogy or the prequel trilogy. 2015 is a huge year for the franchise as it marks it's return to the big screen, and to the forefront of entertainment. However it has earned another milestone of which many of us are unaware....

For the first time in the history of the franchise, Star Wars Episodes IV through VI will be shown on the big screen in China. This is a huge deal as even though Episodes I though III had premiers in China, the original trilogy never got that chance.....until now.

According to Entertainment Weekly, all 6 episodes will be screened at the 18th Shanghai International Film Festival which will take place between June 13th and the 21st.

I'm actually a bit envious, as I never got to experience the original trilogy on the big screen. Attendees of the Shanghai International Film Festival are surely in for a wonderful treat.

As always, comments and personal experiences are always welcome on our Facebook group.

6 Things You May Not Have Known About Boba Fett... According to Boba Fett

When you mention Boba Fett nowadays, many fans automatically think of Temura Morrison. He portrayed Jango, the original man from whom all the clones, including Boba, were created. However us old timers know someone else. The real Boba Fett. Jeremy Bulloch.

May 21st marked the 35th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back. To celebrate the occasion, The Huffington Post reached out to Jeremy Bulloch to share some on-set stories. He shared some things about his experiences that perhaps not many others know.

  • Boba Fett's demeanor was inspired by Clint Eastwood's character in the classic Sergio Leone spaghetti western,  "A Fist Full of Dollars".
A huge fan of westerns, Bulloch said Boba Fett's cape reminded him of Clint Eastwood's cloak. So he decided to emulate the gunslinger's behavior. Walking around slowly,  watching  people around him very carefully, and waiting.

  • George Lucas initially thought Boba Fett would be a small role, never anticipating the impact the character would have for decades to come.
Bulloch (Left) got the roll thanks to his half brother Robert Watts (Right), who was an associate producer on the film. Jeremy was acting in theater at the time Watts offered him this "small" role. He initially balked, but then accepted the offer when it became apparent that the schedules would not affect his theater commitments. When Jeremy met George, he was greeted with "Welcome aboard. Well, it's not a big role, but welcome".

  • In addition to donning the infamous Mandalorian armor, Jeremy Bulloch also had a second roll in the same film as Lieutenant Sheckil, the Imperial officer in charge of the capture of our heroes.

          ...who was later captured himself.

  • Boba Fett & Darth Vader once bumped into each other on the carbon freezing chamber set, and were both floundering on the floor unable to get up.

  • The Boba Fett costume was a near perfect fit on Jeremy Bulloch when he first tried it on, as if it was made to his measurements. As Vader would put it "It is your Destiny".
When Jeremy showed up on the first day, the suite was already built and they had him try it on for alteration. As it turned out, it fit him perfectly, right down to the boots. They were a size 10, and it just so happened that Jeremy's shoe size was also 10.

The suit still fits to this day.

  • Visibility through the visor was worse than through the Stormtrooper helmets
"Imagine a pair of sunglasses covering the whole of your face, but a deep sort of color". That's how Bulloch described the experience of having the helmet on. He had to rehearse counting how many steps it took to get to his marks during scenes, since he could not see a thing in front of him. This was doubly important, as just like David Prowse, during filming he also had to say his lines, and every time he spoke, the lens would fog up.

Our Favorite Smuggler, I Mean, "Galactic Entrepreneur" is Not Done Yet

He first showed up with his swagger in 1980 and from the looks of it, Lando's not done yet!

After appearing in spoofs of the movies on Robot Chicken, he most recently showed up in the season 1 episode of Star Wars Rebels titled "Idiot's Array", with a heavy hint that he's going to be featured in future episodes as well.

Living up to his self-title of Galactic Entrepreneur, Lando wants in on the big action. What's big right now? The new trilogy of course!

It looks like we may get to see him work his charm on the ladies & out swindle swindlers on the big screen again. During an interview with Vanity Fair, Lawrence Kasdan (who for those not familiar, wrote the screenplay for Empire Strikes Back, and co-wrote the screenplay for Ep.VII) dropped a tasty breadcrumb our way.

At the end of the interview, Bruce Handy asked "My son wants to know: Are we ever going to see Lando Calrissian again in a Star Wars movie?

Kasdan answered with "Right now, there's no Lando Calrissian in this movie, but I don't think he's finished in any way, shape, or form."

Not exactly a precise answer about his chances to appear in the movies, but it does tell us that Lando is far from being written off.

It is worth noting that during an interview with Cinelinx back in February, Billy Dee Williams did address the issue of his fans disappointment that Lando would not appear in Ep. VII. During that interview, Williams stated " Yeah, people were pretty upset about it. But I uh... I may very well...I have a feeling I'm going to show up. There's nothing I can really discuss about it at this stage."
[From the context of his answer, he was talking about the new trilogy in general, and not just Ep.VII.]

You can read the Vanity Fair interview here, and Billy Dee Williams' Cinelinx interview here.

What do you think? Will Lando show up in Episodes 8 or 9, or is he just going to be a mainstay in the books/comics and the animated Rebels series? Chime in on our Facebook group!

Could Marvel & Star Wars Networks Be On The Horizon?

It's a well known fact that Marvel has evolved into a multi-billion dollar enterprise under the Disney umbrella, cranking out one blockbuster after another in theaters, and successful TV programing. It's also well known that before joining the Disney-side (heh heh heh), Star Wars was already an unrivaled Sci-Fi/Fantasy powerhouse with a global fan base. Under the guidance of Disney, that success is now growing exponentially.

There is only so much you can do with solid franchises when you already have the market cornered on movies, books, merchandising, celebratory events and television series. The next logical step would be to create a media outlet built around them. Well, it appears that day may not be too far off.

Straight from the mouth of Disney CEO Bob Iger comes news that the House of Mouse is considering putting together branded TV channels specifically for Marvel and Star Wars.

Should this project come to fruition, whether each franchise will get it's own channel or if it's going to be a single channel dedicated to both is still up in the air.

My hope is separate channels for each.

Two things to consider should this really happen:
  1. Fans will be soon be able to get a daily fix of their preferred franchise all in one place. I don't know about you, but that's a dream come true for me!

  2. To have branded TV channels, you need content. LOTS of content. While Marvel is well stocked in this area, Star Wars is not. All they've got are the movies, Star Wars Rebels, the upcoming Star Wars: Droids series and the as-of-yet still rumored Star Wars live action TV show. This means that Disney will be working on many new projects to fill up time slots. I don't know about you, but I can never get enough of Star Wars....Well except for the Christmas Special and the spin-off Ewok movies (Granted, the latter was for children).
We'll definitely be keeping an eye on this story and bring you any new developments that come to light!

Simon Pegg Accidentally Blurts Out Daniel Craig's Role in Ep.VII

While walking the red carpet in London for his new movie Man Up, Simon Pegg was asked by a reporter about his rumored cameo in The Force Awakens, to which he blurted out " I wasn't a Stormtrooper, Daniel Craig, he was a Stormtrooper". He then quickly followed that up with "I shouldn't have said that".

Was he kidding, or serious? I guess we'll find out in December. Don't expect to see 007's face in the feature though, as it was originally rumored that he was simply lending his voice to a Stormtrooper (possibly holding the rank of Commander) in the film.

Could he be Finn's commanding officer? Or perhaps one of the elite soldiers serving Captain Phasma? Again, we'll have to wait until December to see for ourselves.

Do you think Simon was just pulling our chain or did he let a truth slip?

Star Wars Battlefront Updates v. 2.0

We've got some exciting follow-up news to our previous story about EA's revelations about Star Wars Battlefront's initial release content. EA DICE has disclosed news of additional player controlled vehicles. The news was actually broken by Matthew Everett; who is the game's community manager, during an open question forum on Reddit.

We've known from day one that in-game player controlled vehicles will include speeder bikes, X-wings, and TIE fighters (AT-AT's are on rails, so technically they are not player controlled). Well, you can now add AT-STs, Snowspeeders, the Millennium Falcon, "and more" to the list.

No images of the Falcon have yet to be seen, and no further clarrification about the "and more" has been revealed yet. I'm sure you remember how cool the Falcon looked in BF2,  so imagine how gorgeous our favorite rust bucket with a mean bite will look on the current systems!

Until we get a glimpse of her, check out the other vehicles below:

With each passing tease, news conference, or release statement, EA is just giving us tons of reasons to WANT to play Battlefront.

Movies, games, literature & currently running and upcoming television series. Star Wars is definitely coming back with a vengeance, and Battlefront (while not leading the charge) is right up there with the main assault group!

Year of the Ram? I think not.....2015 is the year of the Force!

Star Wars Battlefront Expectations & Updates

EA Games has announced that they expect to sell upwards of 9 to 10 million copies of Star Wars Battlefront from its release date through March 2016. Pretty bold forecasting you say? Well, it might have to do with another tidbit of news they released, which will likely further increase the already high number of pre-orders as well as release date purchases.

Up until now, many fans have been griping about how Battlefront was allegedly going to have a small number of battlefields, with EA releasing additional locations via DLC.

Well, it appears that's not entirely true... EA has announced that Battlefront will have no less than 12 multi-player maps at launch. That number does not take into account the additional single player/co-op maps also included in the game. In addition to the usual map formats of it's predecessors, some maps will support the 40 player Walker Assault mode and others have been specifically designed for close quarter combat. Additional maps will be released via DLC.

While EA has yet to list the maps, they have revealed 3 locations: Hoth, Endor, and Sullust (images below).

Star Wars Battlefront releases November 17, 2015 with a free DLC pack available December 1st for all those who pre-order the game and December 8th for everyone else. One of the maps in that DLC will be the Battle of Jakku, seen in the most recent trailer showing the downed Star Destroyer and an airborne Boba Fett.

Check out the cover art:

I'm really liking the detailed & grainy look given to Kanan, Hera & Darth Vader, as well as the sharp contrast of black and white to black and red. Check out Kanan's expression. His eyes are a tell tale sign of a young man who's witnessed some horrors, but must do what he can to protect his crew.

Jar Jar Binks May Appear in Episode VII

Before you scream bloody murder, it's not what you think.

J.J. Abrams is contemplating the possibility of killing off Jar Jar Binks once and for all by strategically placing his bones somewhere in the deserts of Jakku as an Easter egg.

"I have a though about putting Jar Jar Binks's bones in the desert there. I'm serious! Only three people will notice, but they'll love it." - J.J. Abrams

If Abrams goes through with it, this will leave only the timeline of post Ep. III to pre Ep. VII for Jar Jar to exist, until his eminent death on Jakku, While many of us will cheer of his demise, it still doesn't prevent the appearance of our *favorite* character in comics or books, as they'll likely have to explain how he ended up dead on the planet......but at least he won't be in the post Ep VII canon.

That's good enough for me.

Will you be glad or upset if J.J. Abrams decides to go through with this? How about if he doesn't? Let us know in our Facebook group.

Artist Spotlight - Rob Taylor from Herofied

When I am looking for inspiration, I need only sit in my office and look at the walls. Boba Fett, Wonder Woman and the Greatest American Hero, just to name a few, grace my walls. They are eye catching. They are conversation starters. They are Herofied!

I had the opportunity to catch up with the genius behind this stylized art over the weekend at C2E2. Read about my experience in this #ForceStrong original! Looking at things at his Etsy shop only gives you a glimpse of what his art looks like properly displayed. I own close to a dozen pieces and I was still WOW'ed by his set up.

I'm going to give you a minute to absorb the sheer awesomeness emanating from the above photo. The man in the middle is a talented artist, photographer and musician. His name is Rob Taylor. He was gracious enough to answer a few questions for me. Check out what he had to say.

How long have you been creating digital art?

I've been creating my stylistic approach to pop culture icons for just under 3 years now.

What was your inspiration for the name "Herofied"?

Though it leans against the norm these days, I have always cheered for the hero and I wanted to build a foundation (and brand) based on the positivity and hope that the best of the heroes represent.  This isn’t to say that I don’t respect the villain’s place.  I have created “Herofied” versions of many “baddies” to date because I firmly believe that good cannot exist without evil.  It is also a great action word which can be applied as a verb such as: This sentence has been HEROFIED!

Is "Herofied" your full time job?

No – not quite yet… I am a professional photographer by trade.  As things progress, I hope to phase myself out of that world and immerse myself more fully in all things Herofied.

What was the first piece you created for the store?

My very first piece is still available in my Etsy shop.  It’s called, “Max Rebo’s Solo Tour.”  It features the lovable blue elephant organ player in Star Wars Return of the Jedi.  Though I have learned a lot since then, I would not change a thing in that piece.  It works perfectly as a minimal work and I owe a lot to the confidence the piece provided me!

How many hours go into creating each piece?

I do have a few different categories of styles which I frequently bounce between. I never clock myself as to how long things take, but more minimal pieces can be a day or two and detailed portraits could take up to a week.  Some of my most detailed pieces such as my Indiana Jones “Totem” print which I created for the 30th anniversary of the Temple of Doom and my “Clone Composite” which features 42 clone helmets from Star Wars took up to 2 months to complete.

Do you have a favorite?

My favorites, or more accurately, “the ones I like to look at the most” tend to be my latest works.  I can’t pinpoint a favorite because I like them all for different reasons.

Do you work with any other materials/mediums (i.e. paint, sketch, marker)?

I work solely in the digital realm, but since my first exhibit I’ve printed my art on alternate materials such as Metal, Wood, and Acrylic.  This adds a WOW factor that is hard to describe, but is easily seen on the faces of the people who stop at my booth because they have never seen anything like it.

Which came first, your music or your art?

My music had been my number one passion long before I knew that I was capable of creating this style of art.  I own a recording studio called “The Escape Hatch” and have released multiple projects under the name Rob Taylor.  In fact, I just released my newest album this year entitled “Imperfectly Sound” which I recorded then mixed and mastered down in Nashville.  Music remains an important part of my life, though the studio now becomes a bit of a workshop for Herofied as that side of me has sort of expanded as of late.

I notice you do a lot of different conventions, what is your favorite "Con" experience?

My favorite local convention here in CT. is Connecticut ComiCONN.  It is what first inspired me to create art for the pop-culture fan base.  It was only after I had such great success at that show that I was able to move on to huge shows such as New York Comic Con etc.  As far as celebs, I very much enjoyed meeting Christopher Lloyd whom I’ve always admired for his role as Doc Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy.  It was also great fun when Billy Dee Williams enjoyed my art so much that he sent his manager to acquire all the pieces of Lando art I’ve created!

What is your favorite movie?

If I can’t include the original Star Wars trilogy as one, I would say Empire Strikes Back in a heartbeat.  Those movies mean quite a lot to me and have inspired me to push myself creatively harder than any other films.

Who is your favorite Superhero/Comic Book Character?

Superman.  I enjoy the fact that in the most pure idea of Superman, you know what you are going to get.  Though seemingly not as tortured or complex as some current offerings, he stands for cut and dry principles.  Truth Justice, the American way; a mass of invincible steel with an unwavering moral compass.  Plus, he can fly – which is awesome.

There you have it. If you have managed to make it past all the links in this article, check out his shop on Etsy by clicking here and his website by clicking here. He also has a Facebook page - click here - and a Twitter - you guessed it...click ----> here. I would highly recommend keeping an eye on his Facebook page, he has some pretty ridiculous sales from time to time. You may catch him on a #FreePrintFriday - where he includes a preselected free print with your order. When you finally embrace the awesome and become Herofied - tell him #ForceStrong sent you.
